Cabinet directs agriculture ministry to prepare for locust outbreaks

The Cabinet has directed the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform to commence with community awareness on the outbreak and control of locusts and other pests.

Minister of information and communication technology Emma Theofelus said this during the announcement of Cabinet decisions in Windhoek on Thursday.

Theofelus said the Cabinet took note of the update on rainfall, and the prospect of locust outbreaks in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region and the likely spread to Namibia, as the bulk of Namibia has received normal rainfall.

She said some parts of the country have received above-normal rainfall between February and March.

“The Cabinet further directed the Ministry of Defence and Veterans Affairs to provide the necessary aerial and other assistance required to control the outbreak of locusts in the country,” she said.

Further, Theofelus said the Cabinet has also approved a draft agreement between Namibia and Kenya on defence cooperation to enable its finalisation.

She said the agreement aims to provide a framework for enhanced reciprocal cooperation in the field of defence and security between the two parties.
