CAN Raises Awareness with ‘Boot Out Cancer’ Campaign

The Cancer Association of Namibia (CAN) officially kicked off its fourth Boot Out Cancer Campaign on 25 July.

In an attempt to raise funds, CAN is selling funky socks of all shapes and sizes at their headquarters in Windhoek West, also promoting International Union against Cancer’s (UNICC) message: ‘Cancer can be prevented’, which is aimed at the youth. Socks range from N$40 to N$120, making a lovely addition to anyone’s winter collection.

“Last year we sold shoelaces, but this year we wanted to do something different,” said CAN’s Leoni le Roux. “One of our aims is to promote a healthy lifestyle. If you change your lifestyle, you can change your life.”

Previous projects that CAN have undertaken include the successful ‘Apple Project’ which has raised over N$10 million since it began, the CHICA Golf Day, the Pink Cupcake Day which takes place in September and the Medi-Clinic Fun Run/Walk, among others.

Although it seems like a ‘distant’ disease, many people today are either suffering from cancer or have been victims of it, including children. Children with Cancer in Namibia (CHICA) is a division of CAN catered to support children who have been diagnosed with cancer and offers assistance throughout the duration of their treatment.

If these children are not treated, they may have a higher risk of not surviving, therefore it is crucial for the association to raise as much as they can to help as many people as possible.

CAN encourages the public to walk 30 minutes a day to become healthy and wish to “educate and promote healthy living by making it fun and accessible for all Namibians.”

The socks will be available throughout the year and anyone can order if they wish. Support the cause and be the change in your community.
