Cancer association focuses on listening, understanding

The Cancer Association of Namibia (CAN) has launched its annual Cancer Awareness Week.

Chief executive of CAN Rolf Hansen has confirmed the week will run from 5 to 9 August.

The week is dedicated to amplifying the voices of cancer patients, and to addressing key issues in the fight against cancer, he says.

“During our 2022 campaign, our focus was on breast cancer care, culminating in the establishment of the Namibian Breast Clinic programme through collaboration with various stakeholders.” Hansen says.

This year’s theme is ‘Nothing About Us Without Us’.

Hansen says CAN aims to stress the importance of listening to and understanding the needs of Namibians with cancer during this week.

“We recognise that decisions and actions are often made without adequately consulting patients on their experience, frustration, and challenges,” he says.

Hansen says CAN acknowledges it does not have all the solutions, but it is committed to listening carefully.

He says the association will develop a position paper based on the shared experiences of patients and address the current status, wish list and actionable steps, and engage with the Ministry of Health and Social Services, other stakeholders, and global partners.

“Together, we can make a difference and positively impact the journey of cancer care in our country,” Hans
en says.
