Cancer Association of Namibia expands palliative care to Erongo

The Cancer Association of Namibia (CAN) has announced the expansion of its palliative care services to the Erongo region through the renovation and construction of the Erongo Palliative Care Centre at Swakopmund.

CAN chief executive officer (CEO) Rolf Hansen says the House Johannesson Care Facility honours Kurt Johannesson, CAN’s longest-serving national director and CEO, for his contributions to cancer care in Namibia.

“We are especially honoured to share that this unit will be named after Kurt Johannesson, paying tribute to his unwavering dedication to the fight against cancer in Namibia,” Hansen says.

He says the new facility, situated at the CAN Erongo Centre, will collaborate with the existing House Zietsman Care Facility in Windhoek to provide comprehensive palliative care services.

These include rehabilitation, stabilisation, respite care, frail care, and hospice care, he says.

The CAN Erongo Centre recently relocated to a new building in the middle of the complex, following phase one of renovations in November. The old offices and apartments are being remodelled as part of the expansion. It is anticipated that the facility will welcome patients by the third quarter of this year.

The initiative aims to ensure equitable access to palliative care for cancer patients and their families across Namibia, Hansen says.
