The champions of the Central Volleyball Association league will be decided this weekend when the final round of matches will be played at the Unam Hall.

Both the men and the women’s leagues are still undecided and have gone down to the wire, with Khomas Nampol Volleyball Club and the Namibia Defence Force Volleyball Club battling it out for the men’s title, while Nampol and Revivals Volleyball Club are the contenders for the women’s title.

NDF A currently lead the men’s log on 53 points, but they have already completed their league campaign and can be overtaken by Khomas Nampol who are on 52 points.

The Police are also the defending CVA champions as well as the NVF Cup champions, and a victory in their final match against third-placed Afrocat C (45 points) on Saturday will see them retaining the Central League title.

Afrocat C, however, pushed KNVC all the way before losing their first round encounter 3-2, and the Police will have to be at their best if they hope to retain the title.

In other men’s matches on Saturday, Afrocat D, who are 10th and second last on the log on eight points, take on eighth-placed Nust Untouchables (20 points), while sixth-placed Kudos (26 points) take on seventh-placed DTS (21 points).

The women’s title will also be decided on Saturday in a top-of-the-log clash between the defending champions Revivals and second-placed Khomas Nampol.

Revivals lead the log on 37 points, but KNVC kept their title hopes alive when they beat Afrocat 3-0 on Monday to move up to 35 points.

There might be more pressure on the Police team as they will have to win the match convincingly by at least two clear sets, while Revivals also won their first round encounter 3-1, but with the title at stake KNVC will be highly motivated and a great match can be expected.

In another women’s match on Saturday, third-placed Kudos (27 points) take on fourth-placed Unam Queens (20 points).

All the other regional leagues will also be concluded this weekend to determine the regional winners and runners-up that will qualify for the NVF Cup tournament in September.

The Kavango Volleyball League champions have already been decided with Calvary Eagles winning the men’s league and Unam Vipers coming second, while Beaufort Volleyball Club won the women’s league followed by Calvary Eagles.

The Central North, the Far North, Erongo and Zambezi leagues, however, still have to be decided.

Joseph Amakali, technical director of the Namibia Volleyball Federation said they are expecting a big crowd at the Unam Hall.

“We are definitely expecting a lot of people, it’s the league deciders, and we also invited some corporate members to showcase our product and to try and get some sponsors on board,” he said.

“The prizemoney at the end is not really worth the effort, with the winners receiving N$5 000, the runners-up N$3 000 and the third-placed teams N$2 000. The teams put in a lot of effort, and there are individuals who go out of their way to support especially the students with lifts and food. There are also other costs like paying the referees and renting the venues, so it’stough on the clubs,” he added.
