I am writing to share my experience as a first-year student with a disability at a Namibian university.
I wish to remain anonymous, but I feel it is important to shed light on the challenges faced by students like myself.
Navigating university life has not been easy. Despite my excitement to begin this journey, I have encountered unexpected struggles, particularly regarding accommodation and accessibility.
During my first semester, I was unable to secure adequate accommodation suited to my needs as a student with a disability. Although access to certain areas of the campus is possible, I am often forced to take longer routes than other students.
This additional travel time adds to my daily challenges, impacting my ability to engage fully in campus activities.
The cost of living also poses a significant burden. Given the current financial strain on students, it would be beneficial if universities offered discounts or financial assistance specifically tailored to students with disabilities.
This would help offset some of the added costs we face in adapting to university life.
My hope in sharing this is to encourage institutions of higher education to consider more inclusive policies, ensuring that all students have equal access and opportunities.
