Church leaders, political parties seek ‘divine intervention’ on drought, peaceful elections

The Alliance of Christian Churches in Namibia (ACCN) hosted a national prayer event on Sunday. This brought together various denominations and political parties to pray for peaceful elections and the blessing of rain in Namibia.

The event was hosted under the theme ‘Enhancing Participatory Democracy’.

ACCN spokesperson Dolly Nengushe said the event aimed to foster unity and peace ahead of the elections while seeking divine intervention on the ongoing drought.

“The church plays a crucial role in shaping the nation’s socio-political landscape. Through prayer and active involvement, we are called to be a moral and prophetic voice, advocating for justice, integrity and the common good,” Nengushe said.

She said the ACCN’s mission extends beyond spiritual matters, highlighting the church’s commitment to addressing socio-economic and political challenges facing the country.

“As we prepare for the elections, it is our duty to pray for our leaders, holding them accountable to the highest standards of justice and service. Leadership should be about humility and putting the needs of the people first, in line with Christian teachings,” Nengushe said.

Meanwhile, Khomas governor Laura McLeod-Katjirua told the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation that church remains a pillar of the nation’s peace and unity.

“One of the most significant ways the church can contribute today is by encouraging active involvement in our national elections. The church has an important role in ensuring that every Namibian understands the significance of their contribution to the democratic process and nation-building,” she said.
