Citizens move up five places

Citizens moved five places up to fourth on the log after beating Eleven Arrows 2-1 at the Sam Nujoma Stadium on Sunday.

Coupled with their 2-all draw against Blue Waters, Civics collected four points over the weekend to see them moving up to fourth place on 26 points on the log.

Against Arrows, veteran striker Lindon Aseb scored two second half goals to secure their victory.

In a dull match of few chances, Aseb opened the scoring on 6 minutes when he pounced to slam a loose ball into the net after fellow striker Henry Somseb’s initial shot was cleared off the line.

Aseb’s goalscoring instincts once again came to the fore 20 minutes later when he pounced onto a loose ball from a corner to stab the ball into the net.

In the final stages, Arrows grabbed a late consolation goal when substitute Simon Samuel headed home from a freekick, but they seldom threatened and Citizens held on for their victory.

In the early match at the Sam Nujoma Stadium Civics and Blue Waters played to a listless 1-1 draw.

In extremely hot conditions, there was little action and the game seemed to be heading for a goalless draw when Civics pounced midway through the second half.

From a quick counterattack, they caught Blue Waters’ defence flatfooted and midfielder Donald Geiseb broke through the defence to score from close range.

Five minutes later Blue Waters won a penalty after a handball in the box, but Civics keeper Edward Maova did well to save Dominic Edom’s shot.

Blue Waters kept on attacking, with a shot by Paulus Job cleared off the line, before their young striker Max Halupe finally got the equaliser with a great 25m shot minute in the final minutes of the game.

The result saw Blue Waters remaining third on the log on 27 points, while Civics are now eighth on the log on 23 points.

In other matches on Sunday, Black Africa beat Benfica 4-1 to move to within four points of log leaders African Stars. BA are now on 31 points but Stars, who are on 35, have two matches in hand.

Unam meanwhile suffered a shock 3-0 defeat against second from bottom, Touch & Go. It completed a poor weekend for Unam, who also dropped points in a 1-all draw against bottom-of-the-log Benfica on Saturday.
