A man accused of killing his girlfriend in her flat in Windhoek four months ago is set to remain in custody after making a second court appearance on a murder charge yesterday.
Appearing before magistrate Jurina Hochobes in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court, Wentzel Maasdorp (40) was informed that the prosecutor general intends to add a charge that he has been facing in the Swakopmund Magistrate’s Court to the charges against him in his Windhoek case.
Maasdorp is charged with counts of murder, theft of a motor vehicle and theft in the Windhoek case.
The state is alleging that he murdered Delia Weimers-Maasdorp (40), with whom he was involved in a domestic relationship, in her flat in Klein Windhoek between 25 and 28 April.
It is also alleged that he stole Weimers-Maasdorp’s car, an iPhone and a television from her flat.
Maasdorp is facing a charge of housebreaking with intent to steal and theft as well.
In that charge, the state is alleging that he broke into a house in the DRC area of Swakopmund on 26 January last year and stole goods valued at N$3 000.
Maasdorp’s trial on that charge was scheduled to begin in the Swakopmund Magistrate’s Court on 7 August, but did not start after the court was informed the prosecutor general instructed that the matter should be transferred to the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court.
Maasdorp was held in custody for three and a half months after being arrested in connection with the Swakopmund matter. He was released on bail in an amount of N$2 000 in May last year.
Public prosecutor Seredine Jacobs asked the magistrate yesterday to cancel Maasdorp’s bail in the housebreaking case, and noted that he was free on bail on that charge when he allegedly committed the other offences of which he is accused.
Defence lawyer Salomon Kanyemba objected to Jacobs’ request. He said there was no bail condition that Maasdorp did not comply with and that the housebreaking and theft charge is not related to the murder and theft charges on which Maasdorp was arrested in Windhoek.
Hochobes agreed with Kanyemba, and extended Maasdorp’s bail in respect of the housebreaking case.
He has not been granted bail on the charges of murder, theft of a motor vehicle and theft of an iPhone and television, though.
Maasdorp’s two cases were both postponed to 28 November for further investigations to be carried out.
