City of Windhoek swears in new councillors

The City of Windhoek on Tuesday swore in new councillors to fill in vacant seats left by Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma Junior and Job Amupanda.

The swearing in was presided over by mayor Ndeshihafela Larandja as chairperson of the council.

Affirmative Repositioning (AR) member Maitjituavi Kavetu was sworn in to replace AR leader Amupanda, who is now a member of parliament.

Swapo member Matheus Shoongo was also sworn in, replacing Nujoma following his recent appointment as Khomas governor.

City of Windhoek CEO Moses Matyayi explained that as per the council rules, the vacant positions needed to be gazetted and filled.

“Names were submitted to us from different parties which then means swearing in needed to take place,” he said.

Kavetu said that as councillors they must speed up the realisation of affordable houses by amending necessary laws to deliver affordable homes for residents.

He said that he will work hard to address the housing backlog, adding that many people have lived in deplorable conditions for too long.

He added that it is up to councillors to cater for the needs of people by passing laws that uplift people’s lives and not become a burden.

Shoongo called for collective effort to address issues affecting residents. Regardless of party affiliations, he urged councillors to work in unison and pass resolutions that speak to the reality on the ground.

He also called for unity and calm from residents as councillors work to address community issues.
