City of Windhoek zero car day attracts cyclists, runners and walkers

City of Windhoek spokesperson Harold Akwenye said it was inspiring to see residents showing up in numbers to participate in Zero Emissions Day activities on Saturday.

The day is observed annually on 21 September.

The municipality held a series of engaging activities, which included residents walking, running and cycling from its head office to Zoo Park.

Akwenye said Zero Emmissions Day, also known as car-free day, encourages individuals to forgo their cars for a day.
He emphasised the significant benefits of reducing air pollution and fostering a safer environment for walking and cycling.

“It was truly inspiring to see numerous residents participate in the 5km challenge by cycling, walking or running,” he said.

Manager of health and environment for the City of Windhoek Mary-Anne Hijarunguru expressed her gratitude to all those who participated.

Following the challenge, the official opening of the Wellness Festival commenced at Zoo Park, featuring a keynote address by councillor Ndeshihafela Larandja.

She emphasised that the initiatives should extend beyond events and awareness.

“It is vital for residents to incorporate environmentally friendly practices into their daily lives,” Larandja said.
She further urged all stakeholders to collaborate in fostering a sustainable community.

The Wellness Festival at Zoo Park showcased a variety of health and wellness organisations, vendors and fitness clubs, along with healthy food and refreshments.

The zero emissions activities were sponsored by Woermann Brock, Total Energy, Gondwana, MobiPay, Wingoc, the World Wildlife Fund, KfW Development Bank, Mega Centre, The Namibian, Pick n Pay Namibia and NamPower.
