City police respond to allegations of inhumane conduct at Unam campus

The Windhoek City Police, through the City of Windhoek, has responded to allegations of inhumane conduct following an incident at the University of Namibia’s (Unam) main campus on Wednesday afternoon.

According to the police, two officers were on a routine patrol along Mandume Ndemufayo Avenue, near the Unam campus, when they observed two women engaging in street trading activities, in violation of the Windhoek municipal by-laws.

The officers, who were in a marked City Police vehicle, approached the suspects.

“Upon noticing the officers, the suspects fled the scene with their goods, despite being instructed to stop. As they ran, some of their products, including fat cakes and homemade soft drinks, fell to the ground.

“The officers then approached the area where the goods had scattered, and upon further inspection, identified the items,” the City of Windhoek says.

The city adds that after making contact with the suspects, the officers persuaded them to return to the scene. They were cautioned and directed to vacate the area.

However, one of the suspects allegedly refused to comply, leading to the confiscation of the goods.

The City Police says its officers act professionally and respectfully during their duties, and that enforcement actions are carried out following established procedures.
