CIVICS were knocked out of the Confederation of African Football (Caf) Champions League by South African premier league side Supersport United on Friday night.
Civics lost 0-1 at the Independence Stadium in Windhoek bringing the aggregate loss to 0 – 6, having lost to Supersport by five goals to nothing in Pretoria last month. From the onset of the match on Friday night both Civics and Supersport went in search for goals. But, it was the visiting side which drew first blood in the 13th minute, with Tsweu Mokoro being the hitman. He shot past Danzyl Bruwer, after a clean pass from the stocky but clinical Daniel Matsau, just infront of goal.Mokoro was left on his own before scoring the goal as the Civics defence tried to re-organise themselves in the wake of mounting pressure from the opposition.Another chance came for United in the 25th minute when Ivorian forward Aubin Takuchie sprinted forward and shot past Bruwer, but referee Frank Mlangeni from Swaziland disallowed the goal.Takuchie, who gave the home side’s defence anxious moments throughout the encounter, was instead penalised for pushing Bruwer. The first half saw United players knocking the ball among themselves with ease, but did little to convert their chances as the Civics defence was marvelously marshalled by its captain, Amos Shiyuka.Supersport United continued to urgently go for goals at the start of the second half, but Bruwer managed to prevent more goals from going past him.Supersport goalkeeper Calvin Marlin was also kept busy during the second half by Cascas Angula and substitute Congo Hindjou who took their chances upfront.Angula especially had two brilliant headers that were destined for goal, but Marlin had his quick reflexes to thank as he kept both out.Opportunities that came from strikers from both teams mostly went wide, with the closest being Peter Khoabane ballooning the ball over the cross bar just infront of the goal in the 36th minute.
