Civics resort to Akan as coach

NAMIBIA Premier League side Civics is expected to confirm former Black Africa coach Ali Akan as the new man in charge this week, after the recent fell-out between the side’s management and Eric Muinjo.

Akan has already taken over at training and is expected to sign a contract with Civics tomorrow. Civics’ Administrative Secretary and spokesperson, Tim Isaacs told The Namibian Sport yesterday that although Akan has started attending training sessions, his appointment is expected to be officially confirmed tomorrow.In the meantime, former coach Muinjo, is currently in a dispute with the club’s bosses after he was questioned on the team’s poor show when they lost in the MTC Cup final to Blue Waters, while they were thumped by minnows Friends during the NFA Cup preliminary rounds recently.Muinjo could not be traced for comment, but Isaacs said that they are confident that they will reach an agreement with him.”We asked Akan to take over the side for now.We are expected to seriously prepare for an important match against Supersport United,” Isaacs said.Civics has been drawn against South African Premier Soccer League side, Supersport United, in a Champions League encounter.The first leg is due on March 6 in Pretoria.Civics will be making their debut in the competition.Akan, if confirmed, will mainly be tasked to lead Civics through the Champions League, while his other main target will be to win the domestic league title.Civics has never won the local league and stand a good chance if they maintain the lead at the top of the table.Civics, with 34 point, lead Blue Waters (33) while Chief Santos is in third spot with 29 points.Akan(44), a Kurdish-born coach is in Namibia since 1997 and had stints with other premier league clubs such as Ramblers, Tigers, African Stars and Blue Waters.He has won the league with Blue Waters in the 2000/2001 season and against with Black Africa the following season, while he was also named as the Coach of the Year in 2002.Akan said he has accepted the offer to be in charge of Civics and will do everything in his power to make it a success.Civics’ Administrative Secretary and spokesperson, Tim Isaacs told The Namibian Sport yesterday that although Akan has started attending training sessions, his appointment is expected to be officially confirmed tomorrow.
