Climate Change: Is Namibia Ready?

Major world summits have been held to discuss climate change, and Namibia has been no stranger to it.

Last year was regarded the hottest year on record.

Namibia has experienced weather patterns changing in the form of flash floods and extended drought seasons.

Extreme weather changes have disturbed agricultural production, which more than 70% of Namibians depend on.

Bill Gates has written a book, titled ‘How to Avoid a Climate Disaster: The Solutions We Have and the Breakthroughs We Need’.

He shared lessons for avoiding a climate crisis.

As a 28-year-old youth activist, I think this book is one of the best in terms of providing a comprehensive overview of the challenges of climate change and proposing practical solutions.

Namibia is considered one of the countries most vulnerable to the effects of climate change.

Therefore, the country needs a population that is environmentally literate.

Fellow Namibians, young and old, let’s be aware and organised for the challenge we are faced with.

We need to support and participate in the international summits and campaigns aimed to combat the causes of climate change, and make our relevant contributions as Namibians.

We need to implement appropriate climate adaptation measures to ensure food and nutrition security for the livelihoods of rural communities.

Communities need to be taught that traditional methods are no longer sufficient to ensure food security in the face of a changing climate.

Alternative solutions should be implemented without delay.

Let’s forge a path towards a future where the impact of climate change no longer dictates our destiny, but rather serves as a catalyst for positive change.

Long live Namibia, a child of international solidarity, midwifed by the United Nations.
