Clinical Erongo are champions

RHONIE GAROEBERONGO were crowned winners of the 19th edition of the Namibian Newspaper Cup after they dispatched pre-tournament favourites Khomas 45-28 in the netball final played at Mariental Stadium on Monday.

The girls from the coast were lethal in front of the hoops and led 11-6 at the end of the first quarter.

Erongo’s goalkeeper and goal defender were solid at the back and snuffed out most attacks from the Khomas team.

In the second quarter Erongo pulled clear to lead 15-8 with the resolute Erongo defence taking nothing for granted.

Clinical Erongo extended their lead and at the end of the second quarter to 20-10.

The third quarter saw Khomas trying to claw their way back into the match, but Erongo’s pint sized centre pulled all the strings with her telling passes to her front two, with Erongo leading 27-14 deep into the third quarter.

In the fourth and final quarter, Erongo kept their momentum and extended their lead 43-27, and at the final whistle they were worthy 45-28 winners to dethrone Kavango East.

Player of the match was Mbahimua Kakuenje of Khomas.
