CoD member dies after observation mission

Johannes Matroos

Congress of Democrats (CoD) member Johannes Matroos passed away on Saturday following the conclusion of a ballot paper printing and design observation mission last week.

The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) announced this on Monday.

According to the ECN, Matroos had been representing the CoD on an official mission in Johannesburg.

In a statement to The Namibian, the ECN reported that on Wednesday, 30 October, the day he was scheduled to return from Johannesburg, Matroos was found unresponsive in his hotel room after he failed to appear for his scheduled transport to the airport.

“Emergency services were immediately contacted, and he was later taken to MediClinic Morningside in Sandton, where he was stabilised and subsequently admitted. His family was notified immediately,” the statement read.

“Unfortunately, his condition worsened during the night and he was later transferred to the intensive care unit where he remained under intensive care until his passing,” it continued.

The statement also noted that Matroos’s remains have not yet arrived in Namibia.
