Johannes Kanime (94) and his partner Ndeshihafela Immanuel (56) have appeared in the Ondangwa Magistrate’s Court on charges of child abuse.

Their case was on Monday postponed to 7 September to allow them to apply for legal aid.

They have allegedly been abusing their nine-year-old granddaughter by chaining her to a tree at Otambo ya Kawali village in Omuntele constituency of the Oshikoto region.

The accused, who are the legal guardians of the child, were released on a warning and are facing charges of child abuse and negligence.

Omuntele constituency councillor Sacky Nangula confirmed the incident on Tuesday.

He told The Namibian that he received calls from the community about the abuse while he was in Windhoek.

He then alerted the police.
