Having struggled to release music as an independent artist, kwaito artist D-Kandjafa recently got his big break when he signed on Deal Done Recordz’s dotted line, and he’s already working on his next album, which he hopes will be released by May.
Speaking on his recording deal, D-Kandjafa shared that he was approached by the label about entering into a marketing and distribution deal which he believes will propel his career to the next level.
“I was struggling to market and distribute music as an independent artist, so when Deal Done Recordz came on board, I was very pleased. I can now concentrate on making great music because those with expertise are taking care of the business.”
Deal Done Recordz boss Dragan Djokic, popularly known in the music arena as Antonio, told The Weekender that D-Kandjafa’s second album, ‘Uukalata’, was among the top three selling albums at Antonio’s Art. He said he approached a few music producers when he was looking for a new artist to sign and most suggested D-Kandjafa.
“There are certain qualities I like in the artists that I sign to Deal Done Recordz and D-Kandjafa ticked all the boxes.”
“I like working with artists who make music that is authentically Namibian because these are the artists who get booked to perform at trade fairs and their music does well in terms of album sales as sheebeens and bar owners purchase their albums for their jukeboxes,” said Antonio, adding that D-Kandjafa is the first artist to be signed to Deal Done Records for a duration of three years.
D-Kandjafa announced he is working with seasoned producers M-jay and Glow and promised great music. “Working on my third album has been an exciting experience because for the first time, I am just worried about the music and the people I make the music with are experienced. I cannot wait for the fans to hear what I am working on,” he teased.
Inspired by Brown Dash,D-Kandjafa stated that his goal is to impact and touch people’s lives the same way his idol did. “I want my music to have the same impact as Brown Dash. I still have a long way to go to reach my goals, hence the title of my next album is ‘Kokule’ which means ‘far’, but like they say, if your dreams do not scare you, then they are not big enough,” he said.
He urged music fans to purchase his sophomore album ‘Uukalata’, describing it as an authentic Namibian kwaito album with Namibian stories.
