Mtc Windhoek Fashion Week 2024 is set to make history with a special showcase of the Damara Horokhoes culture on the runway for the first time.
The event, called ‘Trails of the Damara Horokhoes’, will kick off on 6 November, at the City of Windhoek Conference Hall.
This cultural focus aims to highlight the importance of preserving Namibia’s rich heritage through fashion. The showcase will feature traditional Damara attire and symbols, offering a chance for cultural exchange during one of Namibia’s biggest fashion events.
MTC Windhoek Fashion Week director Luis Munana explained why this is significant.
“Our cultural identity is very important, and sharing it properly makes a difference in society. Fashion tells stories, and through the Damara Horokhoes showcase, we are proud to share these stories with the world. Traditional clothing connects us to our history and can even inspire new fashion ideas.”
This event is the first step toward including more cultural aspects in future fashion weeks. By mixing traditional styles with modern fashion, MTC Windhoek Fashion Week hopes to promote creativity and inspire local designers to create clothing that honours their culture.
The Trails of the Damara Horokhoes event will set the stage for a series of runway shows and activities running from 6 to 9 November. The week will end with a grand outdoor fashion show on Independence Avenue.
Since 2016, MTC Windhoek Fashion Week has been a top event for celebrating local and international fashion. This year’s theme focuses on making fashion more accessible and supporting local designers.
It also keeps a strong focus on Namibia’s cultural roots, making sure that while new trends are explored, the traditions of the past are not forgotten.
