Damasfusion promises spectacular performances for International Jazz Day

Namibia will commemorate International Jazz Day at the Franco-Namibian Cultural Centre (FNCC) tomorrow, with a free concert by local jazz songbird Damasfusion.

The event was implemented by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) and well-known American jazz pianist Herbie Hancock in 2011 to highlight jazz and its diplomatic role of uniting people across the world.

The day honours jazz greats like Miles Davis, Nat King Cole, Louise Armstrong, George Benson and many others, including African giants such as Meriam Makeba, Manu Dibango, Hugh Masekela, Richard Bona, Tony Mingo, Dennis Eiseb, and Rafael Kakuva.

According to Damasfusion, jazz fans can expect fireworks and an array of jazz performances, including her compositions and hits like ‘Bossa Nova,’ Afro-jazz, re-arranged smooth contemporary jazz numbers, and some folk fusion sung in some of the local languages, during her performances.

“Just expect to be mesmerised by Damasfusion,” she says.
She will also perform songs like ‘Bessa Mucho’, ‘Sunset in Namib’ and the ‘Medley’, made up of classic Namibian traditional songs, as well as several renditions of well-known jazz songs.

“This will include some mellow and some upbeat songs to create versatility in performances.

“I’m looking forward to a great evening of networking opportunities for me, the band, and everyone present at the event, hopefully resulting in more events of this nature,” Damasfusion says.

The Afro-jazz fusion performer was born and raised in Namibia’s central urban districts. She was already exposed to music as a child, as both of her parents were multi-instrumentalists. She has a strong voice and can sing in a variety of registers.

Her music appeals to cosmopolitan young Namibians, as well as those who simply enjoy the authentic sound of a live band.
The free event will begin at 19h00.
