De Gouveia sends Old Boys packing

A great bowling spell by Mr 24/7 Welwitschia’s national u19 batsman Matthew de Gouveia sent WHS Old Boys tumbling to a five-wicket defeat in their Cricket Premier League 50-over match in Windhoek on Saturday.

Old Boys were cruising along at 90 for two wickets when leg spinner De Gouveia struck to turn the match on its head, as WHS lost their last eight wickets for only 12 runs.

He bowled Herman Steytler for 18 and then dismissed Christiaan Schumacher for a top score of 40 to start the slide.

Shalako Groenewald also got in on the act with two wickets as Old Boys crashed to 102 all out, but it was De Gouveia who was the destroyer in chief, taking six wickets for nine runs off 4,3 overs.

It wasn’t much of a total to defend, but Old Boys’ seam bowler Llewellyn Louw and spinner Vernon Cloete gave them hope with some early wickets. Louw dismissed Lauritz Haccou (9) and Nian Grobler (12), while Cloete dismissed Scott Winburn (4) and De Gouveia (5), and at 57 for four wickets it was still anyone’s game.

Shaun Silver (25 not out) and Shalako Groenewald (14), however, put Welwitschia in charge with a 27-run partnership, while Enrico van der Westhuizen added 12 not out to take them to a comfortable five-wicket victory.

For Old Boys, Louw took 2/27 and Cloete 2/30.

At Trustco United Park, a fine all-round performance by Nicol Loftie-Eaton and top bowling by Mika Mutumbe and Elton Ambambi led CCD Tigers to a 29-run victory against United.

CCD lost Wayne Raw (7) and Rene Were (8) early on, but Loftie-Eaton and Joshuan Julius steadied the ship with a 64-run partnership.

Julius was the first to go for 20, but Loftie-Eaton continued to attack the bowling at will before he was eventually out for 70 off 63 balls, which included three sixes and eight fours.

Further down the order Ricardo Strauss added 20 and Mika Mutumbe 22 before the whole side was out for 181.

Danie van Schoor (3/43 off 10 overs) and Lohan Louwrens (3/28 off six) were United’s best bowlers.

A great opening spell by Mika Mutumbe immediately put United under pressure as he dismissed Hendrik van der Walt (1), Dewald Nell (3) and Eben van Wyk (0) in quick succession, and with Elton Ambambi dismissing danger man Lohan Louwrens for 2, United crashed to nine for four wickets.

Darren van Wyk and Danie van Schoor led United’s revival with a 91-run partnership, but Ambambi got the breakthrough dismissing Van Schoor for 19 and Van Dyk for 67, which came off 62 balls and included seven huge sixes and three fours.

Further down the order Nyashadzaishe Nyasha added 27 and Henry Olivier 15, before Loftie-Eaton cleaned up the tail to dismiss the whole side for 152 runs, still 29 short of the target.

Mutumbe was CCD’s best bowler, taking 4/21 off 9,4 overs, while Ambambi took 3/30 and Loftie-Eaton 3/26.
