Death toll in Oshana road accident rises to eight

The police in the Oshana region have reported that the death toll in an accident that occurred at Okashandja village on the gravel road between Ondangwa and Uukwiyuushona on Friday has risen to eight people.

This was confirmed by Oshana police spokesperson inspector Thomas Aiyambo on Monday.

It is alleged that the driver of a pickup was travelling from Ondangwa to Uukwiyuushona when he lost control of the vehicle, which collided head-on with a car travelling in the opposite direction.

Aiyambo said the driver of the pickup, who died at the accident scene, was identified as David Tomas (66) from Ekwatambwa-Uukwiyuushona.

The driver of the other vehicle, identified as Aina Angaleni Iita (46) from Oshakati, died at Ongwediva MediPark on Monday.

According to the police, five passengers in the pickup also lost their lives.

They were identified as Jacob Petrus (73), Teodor Akwaake (67), Lea Lukas (63), Immanuel Johannes (35) and Festus Kondjeni (36).

A passenger in the other car who also died was identified as Nehale Toivo Nadhipite Amupolo (21).

Three other passengers have been admitted to hospitals with serious injuries.

“Both drivers were licensed and both vehicles are registered. Police investigations are continuing,” Aiyambo said.
