Debmarine to keep ‘Bridging the Gap’

FOLLOWING last year’s successful pilot event, Debmarine Namibia will invest in at least two more ‘Bridging the Gap’ youth tournaments, the country’s leading marine diamond mining company announced on Thursday.

This year, Swakopmund takes over as the competition’s hosts from Ongwediva.

What is established is that Debmarine Namibia has decided to continue with the N$2 million initiative until 2021 due to the positive impact of the debut edition.

“Not only did the participation of schools surpass our expectations, but this initiative also served as a vehicle to engage pupils in the awareness of diverse career choices available to them in Namibia, such as the unique career options available in the marine diamond industry as part of our school outreach programme,” said Debmarine Namibia chief executive officer Otto Shikongo.

The maiden sports development competition had 26 schools representatives from all 14 regions competing in under-15 and u17 boys and girls football and netball contests.

Oshana won both football and netball sports codes.

The initiative’s primary purpose is to help improve sports participation among the youth at grass-roots level.

Shikongo said the event not only promotes economic development and a healthy lifestyle but also acts as a catalyst for social cohesion among the youth.

“We believe sports development is an important component of personal upliftment, the sheer discipline, dedication and commitment required to excel in sports is crucial catalyst for developing astute young professionals much needed in the industry.

The regional trials will be held during May, and thereafter teams will be selected to compete in the national championships in September.

“A regional approach to sports also allows for cross-cultural exposure, experience and interactions that create life-long friendships bonded by the live of the game.
