Dos Santos dies aged 79

According to international media, he passed on in a clinic in Barcelona, Spain.

He was 79.

News reports say he had been travelling to Spain for several years for cancer treatment.

“The executive of the Republic of Angola bows, with the greatest respect and consideration, to the figure of a statesman of great historical significance, who governed for many years […], ” the Angolan government said on its Facebook page.

One of Africa”;s longest serving leaders, Dos Santos stepped down five years ago.

His rule was marked by a brutal civil war lasting nearly three decades against National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (Unita).

Dos Santos was replaced in 2017 by Joao Lourenco as head of state.

Subsequently, there have been probes into allegations of multi-billion-dollar corruption during the Dos Santos era, targeting the former leader”;s children.
