Driver dies after being thrown from vehicle in accident

A 27-YEAR-OLD man died last Friday when he was thrown out of a vehicle in an accident at Onawa village of Anamulenge constituency in the Omusati region.

According to the Omusati regional police spokesperson, inspector Lineekela Shikongo, it was alleged the driver lost control of a white Toyota pickup when he was trying to overtake a Toyota corolla sedan, causing the pickup to overturn in the process.

“As a result the Toyota pickup overturned, whereby the driver and one passenger were thrown out of the vehicle. The [pickup] driver died on the scene and the passenger sustained moderate injuries, while the driver of a Toyota corolla survived unscathed and no damage to vehicle,” said Shikongo.

The injured passenger was rushed to the Outapi district hospital for medical attention.

The deceased driver was identified as Simeon Mekondjo Leevi, while the passenger was identified as Petrus Paulus (28) from Santa Clara, Angola.

A case of reckless and negligent driving and culpable homicide has been opened at the Outapi Police Station.

His next of kin have been informed.

In another separate incident, a case of culpable homicide has been opened against a 57-year-old woman who has hit a pedestrian with a vehicle today in the morning at Okalonda location in Anamulenge constituency, Omusati region.

It is alleged that the driver of a white Toyota Hilux was driving towards Outapi when she run over the pedestrian who allegedly walked into the road, sustaining serious injuries that led to his sudden death on the spot.

The deceased was identified as Shikambe Absalom Hafeni (28) from Okapuku village, Anamulenge constituency. No arrest has been made in this matter pending further investigations and the decision from the prosecutor general’s office. His next of kin have been informed.
