One thing the Multichoice family prides itself on is telling stories. Promising a reboot of new seasons of your favourite shows, programmes imported from the States, as well as African tales of love, hate, reality and betrayal, there’s no reason to complain of boredom. At the recent DStv Content Showcase held in Johannesburg last month, several channel heads shared more information on what’s to come as well as fun facts you may have not known about the programmes introduced by the Multichoice Group.
Nkateko Mabaso, chief executive officer of M-Net at Multichoice, confirmed that the crime and investigation programme ‘Carte Blanche’ is still the most viewed show on M-Net.
The company plans to spice things up with a South African version of ‘The Bachelor’, which will premiere on 14 February next year. And good news: The hit show ‘Survivor SA’ is making a comeback.
For Afrikaans viewers, Karen Meiring, M-Net director of kykNET, shared that Afrikaans movies are notoriously popular, but series are catching up. “’Binnelanders’ is the most watched local show on ShowMax,” Meiring confirmed. “And interestingly, Afrikaans people are really interested in sex, which ‘Skelmpies’ is about.”
A new reality show ‘Kokkedoor’ is on the way as well as a talent show titled ‘Maak My Famous’, which has received 3 000 entries.
Anyone who’s a fan of Mzansi Magic knows the channel showcases heart-wrenching dramas which you can’t help but love. Crowned as the number one channel on Compact, shows like ‘The Housekeeper’, ‘isThembiso’ and ‘The Herd’ are ready and waiting for viewing.
As you may have noticed, ‘Date My Family’ has returned and shows no signs of slowing down. “2019 is going to be amazing,” Reneilwe Sema, head of Mzansi Magic, said.
Namibia has also seen its fair share of content on the DStv platform. Channel director of east and southern Africa, Timothy Okwaro, said ‘Man of the Hour’, a documentary looking into the life of President Hage Geingob, has been screened on Zambezi Magic. And the team is currently in talks with producers of the hit show ‘The 3rd Will’ to screen yet another season.
Branching into a more southern African sphere, DStv is bringing ‘Our Perfect Wedding Zimbabwe’ to its platforms soon as well as ‘Date My Family Botswana’ in February next year.
Aletta Alberts, executive head of content and strategy and third party channels at the Multichoice Group, said it took the team nine years to build Mzansi Magic as a whole and the efforts have been worth it. “We have to bring our customers the best content in the world,” she said. “And there are certain genres we can localise.”
‘Married At First Sight’ and ‘Durban Beach Rescue’ are good examples of this.
A lot is in store for the festive season this year with programmes such as ‘Mickey’s 90th Spectacular Birthday’, ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’, ‘Quincy Jones’ 85th Birthday Special’, ‘Simply Nigella Christmas Special’, ‘Doctor Who Christmas Specials’ and ‘My Christmas Love’, among many others.
From here, it’s only going to get better.
