THE Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) has confirmed that it is assisting the Namibian Police in tracing electronic voting machines (EVMs) that had gone missing some two years ago.
The ECN said it could not publicly divulge information on the missing EVMs to the public earlier due to concerns of compromising the investigation process.
This was said in a media statement issued by the commission’s chief electoral and referenda officer, Theo Mujoro, on Sunday evening, in response to a article published on Friday.
reported that security agents were working around the clock to locate at least three EVMs believed to have gone missing two years ago.
The EVMs reportedly went missing during the Swapo Party Elders Council’s 6th elective congress held at Outapi in July 2017.
This was also confirmed in the statement.
“In this particular case, following a request dated 18th May 2017, from the Swapo Party Elders Council Elections Committee, the ECN loaned EVMs to the Swapo Party Elders Council for conducting an internal election,” Mujoro noted.
“The commission would not make any further pronouncements on this matter until the investigations are finalised,” he stated.
