The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) has announced that it registered 187 171 eligible voters in the country and at diplomatic missions abroad during the first week of registration.
The general registration of voters commenced on 3 June as scheduled.
The commission says the figure represents an average of 31 195 registered voters per day over a period of six days.
Last week, ECN spokesperson Mulauli Siluka told The Namibian the commission targeted the registration of 1,5 million of the 1,7 million Namibians eligible to vote.
“We are not entirely satisfied with the turnout and the pace at which the process is going but what I can say is, it’s promising. It gets busy at the registration points after 17h00 and we expect to register bigger numbers on Saturdays,” said Siluka last week.
Eligible voters are encouraged to register within their constituencies until 1 August.
