Heritage Week is a time to reflect, celebrate and connect to Namibia’s different cultures.
Tangeni Uushona, the acting education inspector of the Omuthiya circuit in the Oshikoto region, said this at the opening of the 2024 Heritage Week at Omuthiya Cultural Centre on Monday.
“Culture is the heartbeat of our community. It is expressed in the songs we sing, the languages we speak, the art we create and the traditions we uphold. Culture brings us together,” he said.
The event is held under the theme ‘Culture is Community and Community is Culture’.
Uushona said the theme is true as community is the space in which culture comes alive.
“It is the people around us – our families, neighbours and friends – who sustain our cultural practices, who challenge them and who innovate them. Our community is the stage upon which the diverse performances of our cultures play out,” he said.
The chief arts and museum administrator at the Omuthiya Cultural Centre, Ester Leonard, said the event involves training for young people who have registered, exhibitions of cultural food, artefacts, and traditional games.
