Electoral changes coming

A DELEGATION from the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN), which included its chairperson Notemba Tjipueja and the chairperson for the Law Reform and Development Commission (LRDC) Sacky Shanghala, paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Hage Geingob. The visit was to brief him on the upcoming activities of the ECN yesterday.

Tjipueja said that during the two-hour meeting, the ECN presented four drafts that will be consolidated to introduce a new bill for ECN from the Law Reform and Development Commission.

She said that the ECN is facing legal challenges and needs recommendations on how to align elections with the new bill.

“There will be no amendment but just a bill from the Law Reform and Development Commission that will be used for elections and once it is finalised it will be presented in parliament as a whole for further review,” she said.According to Shanghala, the bill will replace other existing bills including the Electoral and Referenda Bill, The Political Parties and Organisation Bill; and The Electoral Adjudication Bill. It will be named the Electoral Matters Bill once it has been approved.

He also said that the LRDC is making the necessary arrangements for the bill to be passed before the presidential election next year.

“The bill will be the first matter that will be discussed and presented to parliament in 2014,” he said.
