THE Electoral Commission of Namibia announced on Friday that 11 candidates will fight for the presidency in the national elections next month.
ECN chairperson Notemba Tjipueja announced the names of the 11 candidates following a public sitting for the nomination of candidates.
Those cleared to contest for the presidency are Rally for Democracy leader Mike Kavekotora, Nudo president Utjiua Muinjangue, APP’s Ignatius Shixuameni, PDM’s McHenry Venaani, Swapo president Hage Geingob and UDF leader Apius Auchab.
Other candidates are former land reform deputy minister Bernadus Swartbooi representing the Landless People’s Movement, Swanu’s Tangeni Iijambo, NEEF’s Epafrans Mukwiilongo and Republican Party’s Henk Mudge.
Dentist Panduleni Itula is the first person in the history of Namibia to contest the presidential elections as an independent.
The nominations of presidential and National Assembly elections closed on Friday. The ECN will announce the final list of political parties to contest the parliamentary elections through a Government Gazette next week.
