SATURDAY’s Women’s Premier League match between Unam and Windhoek Old Boys (WOB) is shaping up as the pick of this weekend’s matches in the Bank Windhoek Indoor Hockey League.
The defending champions WOB have got off to an indifferent start and are currently fourth on the log on eight points from three matches.
They suffered a 3-1 defeat to Saints on 3 February, but since then got back on track with two big victories, beating both Wanderers and NUST 9-2.
They will, however, have to be at their best to beat Unam, who have had a great start to the season.
Unam are the only unbeaten team left in the league and are currently second on the log on 11 points from three matches. They trail log-leaders Saints by four points, but have two matches in hand on Saints, and if they win both their matches this weekend against WOB and bottom-of-the-log United, they could go top of the log.
Unam’s match against WOB is scheduled to start at 18h10 on Saturday at the DTS Hall.
Saints, however, will start as the favorites to win their two matches this weekend – against DTS on Friday night and Wanderers on Saturday afternoon – and barring any upsets, they should remain at the top of the log for the time being.
In the Men’s Premier League, WOB A are also expected to remain at the top of the log as they take on the struggling NUST and Sparta on Saturday.
Mad Maroons were in brilliant form last weekend, beating DTS 4-3 and thrashing NUST 18-0, and two more big wins can be expected against Sparta and NUST who are struggling at the foot of the table.
Mad Maroons are still unbeaten and lead the log on 27 points from seven matches – one point ahead of DTS who have played nine matches.
Saints, who are third on the log on 19 points from five matches, are still unbeaten, and well in the title hunt.
They face an improving Wanderers side at the Windhoek Showgrounds on Friday night and the struggling NUST at the same venue on Saturday night. If they can maintain their unbeaten run, it should add a lot of spice to their encounter against Mad Maroons next Tuesday evening.
In another encounter, fourth-placed Unam should be too strong for WOB B who are still winless and struggling at the foot of the table.
