Governor Neville Andre calls for urgent action to address Erongo water shortages

Erongo governor Neville Andre has expressed concern over the Rural Water Supply Office’s delayed response in addressing the region’s critical water shortages.

Speaking at the opening of the ongoing review workshop for management of the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform at Swakopmund, Andre highlighted the harmful impact of these delays on rural communities, emphasising the office’s role in ensuring access to water.

“The delayed intervention in times of crisis has left many communities struggling to access this essential resource,” he said.

He further called for urgent measures to equip the office, proposing increased funding, additional personnel and improved logistical support as potential solutions.

“A well-equipped and responsive water supply office is essential to ensuring that we can act swiftly in times of need and prevent prolonged hardships in our communities,” he stated.

However, Andre also extended gratitude to the ministry for its efforts in improving water access in certain areas of the region, commending the progress made in the Ozondati pipeline installation, the supply of water to remote areas, and advancements towards constructing a second desalination plant.

In response, minister Calle Schlettwein outlined the ministry’s ongoing initiatives and challenges in addressing water and agricultural development.

He noted significant strides in human resource management, with 69 of 237 vacancies filled as of September 2024.

He added that the ministry aims to fill an additional 280 positions by the end of the 2024/25 financial year, bolstering its capacity to address pressing issues.

“While we celebrate our achievements, we are also aware of the persistent challenges that hinder our progress. Issues such as climate change, limited funding and inadequate infrastructure continue to affect our ability to achieve our goals,” said Schlettwein.

He further reiterated government’s commitment to retaining well-trained staff to deliver relevant and meaningful services to citizens, while tackling challenges through innovative and collaborative solutions.
