Etosha Secondary pupil laid to rest months after drowning in Lake Guinas

The Etosha Secondary School pupil, whose body took months to retrieve after drowning in Lake Guinas, was finally laid to rest on Saturday.

O’Linn Nauyoma’s remains were recovered by sea divers in an operation led by the police and the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture.

Nauyoma (16) was laid to rest at Ohalushu village in the Ohangwena region.

Costs for the recovery of his remains were covered by the education ministry.

Nauyoma drowned at Lake Guinas on 8 September during a school tour last year.

“Since the unfortunate event, the ministry, with other key ministries, has been fully engaged in supporting the family until the recovery,” executive director of education, arts and culture Sanet Steenkamp said earlier.

She said the ministry has also pledged financial support to a local diving company to help with the search for Nauyoma’s body.

“The ministry further extends its condolences to the bereaved family. We will continue to support them,” Steenkamp said.

She commended the police for their efforts and support.
