EU committed to supporting Namibia’s green energy ambitions

European Union (EU) ambassador to Namibia Ana Martins says they are working closely with Namibian authorities to reach the country’s ambition to lead on green energy.

She says the EU has partnered with civil society organisations and the private sector on supporting technical and vocational education programmes, and up-skilling and re-skilling workers required for expanding solar grid access.

She was speaking at the Local Conference of Youth 2024, which is taking place in Windhoek from 23 to 24 October.

“The importance of fostering a just energy transition cannot be overstated. The transition to a green economy must ensure that no one is left behind — particularly Namibia’s youth, women, and vulnerable communities,” Martins said.

She said this will go hand in hand with addressing energy poverty and promoting a green economy.

The conference aims to boost youth climate action locally and create an input into the international conferences.

It represents a national version of the international Conference of Youth, which takes place immediately before the Conference of Parties, the annual UN Climate Change Conference.

At the same event, School Environment Club president Inomuinjo Kapimbi said the conference is a platform for action against climate change and other environmental issues.

He said the time to act is now, and emphasised that it is through collaboration and dialogue that a more sustainable future is built.

“I believe that the youth have the power and passion to lead the way towards a better future,” Kapimbi said
