The European Union (EU) is currently busy assisting Namibia in its fight to be removed from the Financial Action Task Force’s grey list (FATF).
Speaking at a workshop in Windhoek on Monday morning, EU ambassador to Namibia Ana Beatriz Martins said the aim is to strengthen Namibia’s capacity in financial systems, transparency and accountability.
“The ultimate goal of this collaboration is to support Namibia in exiting the FATF’s grey list, while strengthening the country’s financial systems, transparency and accountability. The EU anti-money laundering/countering the financing of terrorism (AML/CFT) Global Facility is a technical assistance project dedicated to supporting partner countries worldwide in strengthening their AML/CFT policies and operational frameworks,” she said.
The EU earlier in the year accepted the government’s request to assist in terms of CFT with international standards on beneficial ownership reporting.
“This mission will assess Namibia’s specific needs and challenges, forming the basis for a work plan proposal tailored specifically to Namibia’s requirements,” the EU ambassador said.
Key Namibian government agencies, relevant ministries and private sectors heads are attending the workshop.
The EU has so far supported 34 countries across the globe in their fight against money laundering and terrorist financing.
“This week is dedicated to support and strengthen national experts and engage in fruitful debates with EU experts,” Martins noted.
