Events this weekend and beyond

TECH PARTY … Tumi Mohamed will perform at this year’s BAR HP Festival.

I thought that as it started to get colder you all would be finding reasons not to leave the house, but I keep seeing more and more posters beckoning you to pull on a sweater, step into some comfy shoes and still live your best life.

There’s art, there’s music, there’s wine and there’s dancing in the desert underneath the stars.

As Michael Bolton says: Let’s get to it.

Today

The Namibia Arts Association is currently exhibiting the photography collection ‘Shadows and Shades: A lexicon for the Namibian and Portuguese Urban Landscape’ by Natache Iilonga. It will run till 15 April during normal working hours.

This Weekend

‘Canvas Chronicles: Whispers of Wanderlust’ invites you on a visual journey through Robyn Brinkmann’s collection this Friday, inspired by the theme ‘Where I’d Rather Be’. It will take place at The Village Garden in Liliencron Street from 18h00. According to them, this exhibition captures the essence of dreamlike escapes and serene sanctuaries. Tickets are N$100.

Windhoek Karnival (Wika) is soon coming to a close at SKW. This Friday is the second International Evening from 19h30 for N$350. Tickets are available at the door.

From 10h00 to 17h00 on 5 April there’s a Go-Fun Family Market at the IFun Family Park. Entry is N$50 for adults and N$100 for children to enjoy the many cool activities, including a waterslide, as well as food and drink stalls.

On Saturday the ‘queen of speech’ Josy Nghipandua will host her public speaking training at Walvis Bay for N$1 350. An attendance certificate, stationery, a manual, lunch and refreshments are available for participants. The venue will be confirmed after booking.

Also on Saturday evening, residents of Okakarara can head on down to Tate Sammy’s Beer House for their annual Independence Bash.

It’s not too late to celebrate 35 years of being Namibian with performances by the likes of One Blood and many others.

Next Week

Next Tuesday Stratos at Avani Hotel is hosting their Taste, Meet and Sip Night from 18h30. For N$500 a person there will be sushi and wine, networking and good vibes.

On Thursday, 10 April, The National Art Gallery of Namibia is launching the ‘Moods and Moments II’ solo exhibition by Mechthild Merdes from 18h00. Entry is free.

Forever Dance Academy is hosting Kizomba and Semba dance lessons every Monday and Wednesday at 12 Hugel Street in Windhoek. Beginners will practise between 18h30 and 19h30, while intermediate and advanced dancers have the 19h30 to 20h30 slot for both days. One drop-in lesson will cost N$100, while packages of eight lessons cost between N$600 and N$700 for individuals and couples, respectively.

The Speakeasy in Liliencron Street is hosting Ladies’ Night every Wednesday with 50% off of all cocktails and meal options available.

Every Friday is Whiskey and Wines at Windhoek Sky Restaurant on the fourth floor of the Independence Memorial Museum from 17h30 to 19h30. Come through for a 20% discount on any whiskey and wine.

Beyond

The Namibia University of Science and Technology is hosting a media management and communication masterclass to empower professionals to thrive in today’s fast-paced media environment. At N$3 900 per person, this 08h30 to 17h30 session will take place on 15 April at the Harold Pupkewitz Graduate School of Business.

The homegrown Between A Rock and a Hard Place (BAR HP) music festival, held at Spitzkoppe and quickly becoming southern Africa’s most quaint tech party, is back on the weekend of 25 April, featuring local, continental and international DJs such as Tumi Mohamed, Da Capo and Shafa, and live art installations.

Tickets are available for a day of camping (at N$750), two days of camping (at N$950), two days of ‘glamping’ in a cabin (at N$8 000) and two days for two people in a bush wagon (N$7 000).

Back in Windhoek over that same weekend, the /Ae //Gams Arts and Cultural Festival will take place at the City of Windhoek parking area.

The theme is ‘The Charm Goes Beyond What You See’ and will feature food and drinks, small business booths and entertainment.
