Katima Mulilo must gear up for a night of electrifying song and dance when the ever-evolving South African girls trio, Dalom Kids, are billed for a live show at the Bezi Bar & Grill on 2 November.

The gig, which is promoted by Intwiza Events Management (IEM) under the theme ‘Celebrating the Legacy of the Late Big Husband Dan Tshanda’, promises to be an explosive affair.

“The Dalom Kids are extremely popular in the Zambezi region. They frequented Namibia, especially the Zambezi region, with the late Dan Tshanda and his group Splash,” says Sylvester Simubali, the owner of IEM.

“Sylvia Tshanda, known as Boss Lady in showbiz, has been running her late husband’s label, Dalom Music Production (DMP) since 2019, and has vowed to keep his legacy alive. The show is designed to bridge the gap left by the absence of Dan Tshanda and Splash,” he says.

Dalom Kids were formed by the legendary Tshanda in 1987.

Sylvia says: “Dalom was actually a moniker affectionately given to Dan by his friends, and it became synonymous with a sound produced by Tshanda, known as Dalom Music, that would go on to captivate audiences across generations.

“The journey of Dalom Kids began in 1987 when Petronella Rampou and Jacqueline Rotwana joined Tshanda’s group Splash as backing vocalists. In 1989, Tshanda expanded the group by adding Martha Nzaima to the duo, solidifying the formation of Dalom Kids.”

Their debut album ‘Mbalembale’, which also featured the timeless ‘Ndilambile’, achieved remarkable success in South Africa, going double platinum and establishing the group as a significant force in the music industry.

Their follow-up album in 1990, ‘Mathambo’, which featured the hit track ‘Nomathemba’, also garnered them critical acclaim.

However, the demands of the music industry led to Nzaima’s departure and she was replaced by Magdeline Zungu.

Their most recent album is ‘Forgiveness’, which was co-produced by Sylvia and Walter Sithole after Tshanda’s passing in 2019.

“The reformed group continues to thrive,” Sylvia says, adding that their third album, ‘Ndicendeni’, also reached double platinum status, driven by the popular single ‘God of Mercy’.”

The title track, ‘Ndicendeni’, became a street anthem in South Africa.

The song also propelled the Dalom Kids to superstar status in Namibia.

Worthwhile mentioning is the fact that ‘Ndicendeni’ carried so much weight that it prompted award-winning South African kwaito star Professor to produce a remix with the Dalom Kids, which also became a big hit with Afro-pop music fans in southern Africa.

“One of the most notable achievements of this era was the collaboration with Master KG on the song ‘Keneilwe’, which earned the prestigious Song of the Year award in 2023 by Thobela. Anticipation builds for future collaborations,” Sylvia says.

“Dalom Kids remain a beacon of resilience and musical excellence as they continue the legacy of Dan Tshanda and ensure that their music will be heard for years to come.

“They released an exciting single called ‘Simkhuzile’, with the talented Lowsheen, Harricane and Charlotte.”

Tshanda says the release of ‘Simkhuzile’, for which they are in the process of creating a music video, marks a significant moment for Dalom Kids.

Dalom Kids also collaborated with other contemporary musicians, like Tswana singer Vee Mapeezy and Venda pop star Makhadzi.

Meanwhile, Simubali says two local acts, Spinny and Green Kids, will be the supporting artists for the show.

The damage is N$100 in advance and N$150 at the entrance.
