Family frustrated about slow progress on murder case

Raymond Matroos

Grieving relatives of a woman alleged to have been raped and murdered in Windhoek three years ago say they are frustrated with the lack of progress on the case.

Two men have been charged over the incident.

“As a family, we are getting frustrated that the case doesn’t have any progress,” Gabes Eixab said after one of the men accused of raping and murdering his niece Quinteline Eixas made his latest appearance in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court in Katutura yesterday.

“We just want justice to be served so that we can feel a bit better, although a soul is lost,” Eixab said.

He questioned why laboratory results requested during the investigation of Eixas’ death are still not available more than three years after she was killed.

Quinteline Eixas

Eixas’ death “is a permanent scar on our hearts” and has left four young children without their mother, he added.

Eixas (29) was found dead in a churchyard in the Dolam area of Katutura in Windhoek on 23 May 2021.

It was reported at the time that her body was discovered wrapped in a blood-soaked towel.

A Windhoek resident, Raymond Matroos (37), was arrested in connection with Eixas’ death near the end of May 2021.

A second accused, Rajiv Jossep (36), was arrested in April 2022.

Matroos and Jossep are charged with counts of murder and rape. Both denied guilt on the charges during a court appearance in May last year.

Jossep was absent when Matroos appeared before magistrate Rosalia Aihuki in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court in Katutura yesterday.

The magistrate was informed that Jossep is ill and is receiving medical treatment at Windhoek Intermediate Hospital.

Public prosecutor Edel Upindi informed the court that laboratory results and cellphone records that should be obtained according to an instruction from the Office of the Prosecutor General are not yet available.

Aihuki postponed the case to 20 November for further investigations to be carried out.

Matroos and Jossep were both granted bail in January 2023.

Matroos is free on bail in an amount of N$1 500, while Jossep was released on bail of N$1 000 in December last year.
