A 33-year-old man died after allegedly consuming a chemical substance at a farm near Tsumeb in the Oshikoto Region on Saturday.
Regional police crime investigations coordinator, deputy commissioner Titus Ekandjo, said on Thursday that the incident occurred on Saturday night.
The deceased was identified as Kandere Shitunda, a worker at the farm. His next of kin have been informed.
“It is alleged that on Saturday at around 20h00 the deceased was brought to Tsumeb State Hospital by his employer after he allegedly consumed a chemical substance, which is an insecticide at the farm,” Ekandjo said.
He added that the man passed away around 20h40, while being attended to by a doctor in the casualty ward. “The reason why the deceased consumed the substance is not known,” said Ekandjo.
Ekandjo said the incident was only reported to the police on Wednesday, as the nurses on duty at the time failed to inform the police about the matter.
An autopsy will be conducted while investigations continue.
