First season of ‘Nanub’ ends with a flourish, season two in the works

Michael Namaseb

Local film-maker Michael Namaseb has wrapped up the first season of his reality-based web series, ‘Nanub: The Heartbeat of the City’.

Streaming on YouTube, the series dives into Namibian popular culture, drawing inspiration from the lively streets of Windhoek. It explores Namaseb’s life, showcasing the ups and downs of being a backup dancer and artist.

The six-episode season premiered on 8 August, with its finale airing last month.

Reflecting on the journey, Namaseb shared his passion for the film and entertainment industry, which began after graduating in television production from the College of the Arts in 2019.

“My film journey has been so amazing. I have worked on a lot of local productions and events that have fuelled my passion,” he says.

Namaseb says the idea for the series came from his daily routines, which include juggling work deadlines, dance rehearsals, music video shoots and organising events.

“I am constantly exposed to various experiences, both good and bad. Representation is like a backbone and a guiding principle behind everything I do,” he says.

While writing ‘Nanub’, he focused on relatable topics and characters inspired by his daily life.

“My aim was for the audience to relate to the characters, even if they come from a completely different world. I intentionally showcased how unique people can be, especially when they often find themselves together.”

Despite the series’ success, Namaseb faced personal challenges, such as opening up to others.

“I value privacy. It takes a lot for me to open up and allow people into my life. However, I realised the only way I could make a positive impact was by putting myself out there, which the show displayed,” he says.

Namaseb expressed gratitude to the Namibian Film Commission for its support, as well as to local creatives who stepped in as collaborators, including the clothing brand Peacemakers and Enhancement Hub. He urged Namibian content creators to push harder and attract investors.

“We are a little behind, but a few are working hard,” he says.

As he gears up for season two, Namaseb promises more exciting content. “There are so many shows I am currently working on, and I can’t wait for the nation to watch.”
