Five men escaped from the Mariental police station holding cells on Friday between 22h00 and 23h00.
According to the police weekend crime report, the suspects are identified as Erick Swartbooi (26), Ivan Wimperth (41), Alloysius van der Westhuizen (33), Willem Stanley Fredericks (36) and Peter Afrikaner (35).
They allegedly damaged a steel door and used a self-made key to unlock it.
“The suspects were in custody for theft, housebreaking with intent to steal, assault with grievous bodily harm and murder,” notes the police report.
Police investigations are ongoing.
