Five of a Kind + 1

For the third time and with a guest jeweller, ‘Five of a Kind’, a gleaming and gorgeous display of jewellery designed by Stefan Dietz, Frieda Lühl, Attila Giersch, Sylvia von Kühne and Heike Lukaschick, is sitting pretty at the Omba Gallery to be dazzled by and drooled on.

Joining the famous five and elevating the event to ‘Five of a Kind + 1’ is Elze Eigelaar whose silver rings and brooches adorned with silk thread, embroidery cotton, cardboard and pearls is an interesting addition to what is fast becoming the most sophisticated gathering of goldsmiths in the city.

True to fine form are Dietz, Giersch, Lühl, von Kühne and Lukaschik, who each present their signature mostly silver rings, necklaces and brooches. Dietz makes intriguing use of the unlikely gems in nature by incorporation turtle shells and omba in his designs, while Giersch’s leaf like and curved offerings are made of stainless steel with silver settings boasting bright stones in large elegant pieces.

Heike Lukaschick’s fare is firmly feminine and youthful in its flower forms embellished with pink enamel which speak to the delicateness, femininity and lightness of Eigelaar’s pieces.

Certainly winning in terms of display is von Kühne who presents her earrings on paintings of beautiful women she has conjured and created herself. Adding some excellent visual art to the space, von Kühne reveals herself as a multi-talent whose silver necklaces and earrings embellished with amethyst are just as beautiful.

Frieda Lühl’s large round rings are as quaint as ever, as are her necklaces embellished with quartz and rhodolite stones. Famed for her once-off creations, water lily like rings and morphed squares, Luhl now offers jewellery making workshops where attendees can make their own trinkets.

Definitely a wonderful exhibition and with the third time just as charming, ‘Five of a Kind + 1’ closes tonight with a casual event at the Omba Gallery where the public can take a final look at the collection, enjoy a glass of bubbly, purchase pieces and meet the goldsmiths.

‘Five of a Kind + 1’ has been on display since 16 April. For more information on Frieda Luhl’s hobby class, call 081 751 3026 or email info@frieda.co.za. The closing event at the Omba Gallery is from 17h00 to 19h00 tonight.
