Flash flood alert at Ruacana

A TEAM comprising members of the police and NamPower officials has been dispatched to villages affected by a flood caused by an overflow in the Kunene River at Ruacana.

NamPower corporate communications officer Gladwin Groenewaldt in a statement released yesterday said that the river overflow was caused by heavy rains in southern Angola, upstream of the Ruacana hydropower station.

According to the statement, the flash flood reached Ruacana on Wednesday evening.

“NamPower wishes to warn all residents residing in the areas downstream of Ruacana hydropower station to be on high flood alert,” Groenewaldt said.

Sources on both sides of the river, which also serves as the border between Namibia and Angola, informed on Thursday that several homesteads on the Angolan side of the river were flooded and the inhabitants had to move to higher ground.
