First lady Monica Geingos has offered to provide psycho-social support and trauma debriefs to the family of 13 people who have died due to suspected poisoning after eating porridge made with mahangu at Kayova, a village in Kavango East.
It is alleged that on Saturday, family members ranging in age from two to 33 years fell severely ill after eating porridge made of flour with an additive of dried pounded fermented sediment from a homemade beverage locally known as ‘mundevere’. Thirteen members of the family have died since then.
“This is a devastating loss,” Geingos said in a press statement on Tuesday evening.
“My office is readying to provide psycho-social support and trauma debriefs to the bereaved family and community members’ frontline responders,” the first lady stated.
Geingos also expressed condolences to the family.
“I speak in unison with many Namibians in expressing my heartfelt condolences to Godfried Shishugho Kangungu and the entire Kangungu family during this period of unspeakable grief,” she stated.
She added: “This profound loss has left me in deep reflection on the fragility of life and the importance of community care and kindness.”
