A member of the Society of Advocates of Namibia, Beatrix de Jager, has been appointed as a judge of the High Court with effect from the start of July.
The secretary of the Judicial Service Commission, Elias Shikongo, announced De Jager’s appointment in a statement on Friday.
Shikongo also announced that retired High Court judge George Coleman has been appointed as an acting judge of the High Court with effect from 1 July to 9 December this year.
De Jager served as an acting judge from mid-January this year to the middle of April.
She has been in the legal profession since 2004 and practised law as a member of the Society of Advocates of Namibia since 2009.
Coleman was first appointed as a judge of the High Court at the start of 2022.
He retired at the end of January this year, but is now returning to the High Court bench in an acting capacity.
The High Court bench has now almost reached gender parity following the appointment of De Jager.
Excluding acting judges, the court has 11 men and nine women serving as judges currently.
