Former Ohangwena governor Usko Nghaamwa is pleading with women to go out in numbers and vote for Swapo’s presidential candidate, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, in the upcoming presidential election.
Nghaamwa made this call at the fourth edition of the Omaludi Agricultural Festival gala dinner at Okongo on Saturday, where Nandi-Ndaitwah was the guest of honour.
“I want to tell all women who are here, both young and old . . . I am not doing politics, but all women, please go and vote properly and wisely.
“I’m ready if you are not able to cast your vote, to get your people to help you cast your vote at an election point,” Nghaamwa said.
“Go and vote in big numbers. Meekulu [Nandi-Ndaitwah] must win with a two-third majority. To men, I don’t want to hear someone saying they have a farm somewhere while it’s election day the following day, and you want to take the wife along while people need to vote.
“It must not be done,” he said.
Nghaamwa called on people to cancel their plans for election day to vote.
“Women have a tendency of not liking to vote for each other. But please go and vote wisely. Don’t bring me shame,” he said.
Nghaamwa also urged constituency councillors to educate the public on the importance of registering to vote and where they can register.
“Because if you do not have a voting card, you will not vote. Make sure you have registered,” he said.
Nghaamwa advised farmers with many head of cattle to assist with paying children’s school fees.
“I will not be happy to see someone with many cattle, while a child is just home crying not knowing who will pay for their school fees.
“Let us play our part in sending children to school so we can build Namibia together,” he said.
CULTURE, DIVERSITY
Speaking at the same event, the festival’s patron and vice president, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, said Namibians should not allow their different cultures and diversity to divide them, but rather to strengthen them.
“Therefore, as we strengthen the Omaludi Agricultural Festival, we would also have pride in other cultural activities in our country,” she said.
“I would like to encourage Namibians to be exchanging cultures and to be attending each other’s cultures in order to admire them and take them as part and parcel of themselves,” Nandi-Ndaitwah said.
