The Office of the President has thanked Namibians for their continued support and empathy towards the country’s founding president, Sam Nujoma.
Nujoma is recuperating at a local hospital after a routine and precautionary medical procedure.
Nujoma’s personal physician Dr Tshalli Iithete and his senior special assistant Paul Shipale, in a joint media statement yesterday, announced that Nujoma is recuperating well.
This follows reports in the media that Nujoma (95) was admitted at Lady Pohamba Private Hospital in Windhoek on Thursday.
“Indeed, the founding president is hospitalised as a routine and precautionary medical procedure due to an infection, given his advanced age,” Shipale and Iithete noted in the statement.
They said Nujoma is under the care of “competent and dedicated” medical doctors, registered nurses and specialists who are looking after him.
“He is recuperating very well and we are satisfied with his recovery progress.”
Nujoma’s son, Utoni Nujoma, confirmed that the founding president was admitted to hospital on Thursday.
“He was not feeling well but he is okay now,” he said on Friday.
Utoni did not disclose any further details.
The Namibian recently reported that Nujoma did not attend his late sister, Frieda Daniel’s, memorial last month, with sources saying this was due to ill health.
Nujoma’s last public appearance was in February at former president Hage Geingob’s memorial service and funeral.
Iithete in May said Nujoma was in good health after being discharged from hospital a week before.
