Four constituencies to hold by-elections after councillor resignations

Four constituencies will hold by-elections in three months following the resignations of their councillors, who have taken up seats in the National Assembly.

The affected constituencies are Grootfontein and Otjiwarongo in the Otjozondjupa region, Sesfontein in the Kunene region and Kabbe constituency in the Zambezi region.

The councillors resigned after being elected as members of parliament following the November 2024 national elections.

The councillors are Hendrik Gaobaeb from Sesfontein, Marlyn Mbakera from Otjiwarongo constituency, Elder Filipe from Grootfontein and John Likando from Kabbe South.

Filipe, Mbakera and Gaobaeb were sworn in as members of the National Assembly on Friday while Likando is yet to be sworn in. He is expected to join the National Assembly following the resignation of Swapo member Lucia Witbooi who is appointed as vice president.

Mbakera, a Swapo member, served as chairperson of the Otjozondjupa Regional Council.

Meanwhile, four regions are currently without governors after they took up parliamentary seats on Friday.

The regions are Hardap, Kavango West, Kunene and Otjozondjupa.
